FFA members awarded honor
Two former Buckeye Career Center students and FFA members were recently awarded the FFA American Degree at the FFA National Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana. Britney Wayts, ag and diesel/Carrollton, served as the 2017-18 BCC FFA chapter president while Ashley Smitley, natural resources/Indian Valley, served as the 2017-18 chapter vice president.
According to the National FFA organization, the American Degree is awarded each year to less than 1 percent of members, making it one of the organization’s highest honors. In addition to their degree certificate, recipients also received a gold American FFA Degree key.
Other attendees to this year’s FFA Convention from Buckeye Career Center included current chapter President Paul Hansel, energy operations/Garaway; secretary Madyson Gill, energy operations/Tuscarawas Valley; reporter Devan Landes, ag and diesel/New Philadelphia; sentinel Nolan Hagan, ag and diesel/Indian Valley; student advisor Nate Dryden, natural resources/Indian Valley; and historian Elizabeth Martin, natural resources/Claymont.
Members Bryce Westfall, energy operations/Canton City; Erin Cline, meat cutting/Claymont; Autumn Walls, welding/Sandy Valley; Amanda Galbraith, commercial truck/Claymont; and Dakota Walters, ag and diesel/Ridgewood, also attended the event. The students were accompanied by ag and diesel instructor Mr. Brad Pfeiffer and intervention specialist Mrs. Brenda Belknap.
The FFA National Convention ran Oct. 30 through Nov. 2 at the Indiana Convention Center.
