The Arts Center of Newcomerstown is featuring the artwork of Lois Merrill and an exhibit of ceramics created by Newcomerstown elementary school students.

Merrill was born and raised in Columbus and is a nurse doing reflexology and art therapy at Hospice of Guernsey Inc. She moved to Newcomerstown with her husband, Dr. Timothy Merrill, when he opened his dental practice in 1980.

“I’ve always liked being creative with gardening, sewing, painting, jewelry and pottery,” Merrill said. “I started to paint seriously about 20 years ago. Lately I’ve been making pottery, wind chimes, crystal sun catchers and oil paintings."

Merrill also does a weaving workshop and a stepping memory stone workshop for the bereaved at hospice.

“I think of the creative arts, like music, dance, poetry, art and drama, as healing," Merrill said. "They help us express what words sometimes cannot say or when words are not enough. I like to think they bring out our joy, our joy in life and our love of nature, family, friends and faith. Sharing my paintings and art is sharing a part of me that I hope everyone will enjoy.”

The artworks of Merril are on display at ARTSNCT through May 31.

An untitled exhibit of ceramics by Newcomerstown’s east and west school students also is on display at ARTSNCT through May 18.

"It features truly amazing pieces of ceramic art by students in grades k-5. Each and every piece proves, in its own way, that it was carefully created with much care and great imagination," said Michael Wise, ARTSNCT director. "The subject matter, colors and details of each piece tend to leave one in awe of these young artists."

ARTSNCT is located at 304 S. College St. in Newcomerstown. Call 740-575-5710 or find them online at www.artsNCT.org.
