After years of putting on shows created elsewhere, Ohio Star Theater is about to debut an original Bible-based musical.

“The Road to Damascus: A Musical Journey Through the Book of Acts” will premiere May 14 and run through Nov. 4 at the theater on Old Route 39 on the Dutch Valley campus. Artistic Director Tammie McKenzie oversees the show, which focuses on the dramatic transformation of Saul, a zealous persecutor of Christians, to Paul, the devoted follower of Christ.

“We’ve heard about these characters from church and Sunday school all of our lives, but it’s a wholly different experience to see these people embodied in front of you and really getting to see the humanness of these characters,” McKenzie said. “I think what that does for us is it makes us feel connected to the story.”

In addition to McKenzie and composer/orchestrator Steve Parsons, “The Road to Damascus” creative team features script writer Joseph Sheridan and lyricist Ellie Zumbach, who both appeared in last year’s Ohio Star Theater production of the Sight & Sound musical “Ruth.” Audiences will see plenty of other familiar faces on the stage including Logan Harper as Saul/Paul, Matthew Dugan as Peter and Annie Heartney as Rhoda. Also back by popular demand are Humphrey the Camel and friends from Sunset Acre Farms.

“We’ll have people call the box office, and the first thing they ask us is, ‘Are there going to be live animals in the play?’ So they really want to see live animals,” McKenzie said.
