The Tuscarawas Philharmonic will host its annual Performing Arts Camp this June at the Kent State Tuscarawas Performing Arts Center. Registration forms are now being accepted for the string and percussion programs scheduled June 15-18.

Mary Cooper, cellist with the Tuscarawas Philharmonic, coordinates the string program held from 9 a.m. to noon. The program is open to all string players through 12th grade and will be divided into two groups: a beginning orchestra for students who have beginning music reading skills and an advanced orchestra for those who have good reading skills and want to be challenged to play more advanced repertoire.

The percussion camp, which will be held from 1-4 p.m., is specifically designed for percussionists who have completed grade 6-9. Led by Joan Wenzel and Thomas Roblee, both performers with the philharmonic, students will explore classical and world percussion through group lessons and ensemble experiences.

The week will culminate in a combined concert on stage at the Performing Arts Center with both groups performing. The concert, beginning at 6:30 p.m., is free and open to the public.

The cost of the four-day event is $105, and the deadline for registering is May 7. Parents who register their students by April 15 will receive a $10 discount.

Register online at www.camp.tuscphil.org. Parents interested in enrolling their young musicians also may contact the coordinators: Mary Cooper at 330-243-4122 and marypatricecooper@gmail.com and Joan Wenzel at 330-204-5647 and wenzelj82660@gmail.com.

The annual event is sponsored by Barbour Publishing, Dover Chemical, Progressive Foam, ProVia, and The Floyd and Doris Kimble Foundation. If you would like to contribute to the philharmonic’s educational programs or sponsor a scholarship for students with financial needs, email executive director Sallie Stroup at sallie.d.stroup@gmail.com.
