The Wooster Chamber Music Series will present the SPA Trio in concert in Gault Recital Hall at The College of Wooster’s Scheide Music Center on Feb. 11 at 3 p.m.

The ensemble features soprano Susanna Phillips, who spent 12 seasons in leading roles at New York’s Metropolitan Opera and continues to establish herself. She is joined by former principal violist of the New York Philharmonic and two-time Grammy nominee Paul Neubauer and solo and collaborative pianist Anne-Marie McDermott. This trio first performed together in 2011, and they have enjoyed exploring and performing salon songs with instrumental accompaniment.

Soprano, viola and piano are not a common combination in chamber music. However, there is a long practice of singers performing intimate music composed for the drawing room rather than the concert hall. Historic pairings include Enrico Caruso with Mischa Elman, Marian Anderson with William Primrose, and even Bing Crosby and Jascha Heifetz. The SPA Trio continues this tradition by performing works that range from Mendelssohn to Robert Schumann and Clara Schumann and George Gershwin.

The Wooster Chamber Music Series, established in 1986, features world-renowned chamber music ensembles. Tickets are $25 and are available at The College of Wooster’s Mayer Bookstore, by calling 330-263-2421 or at the door. Middle, high school and college students are admitted for free.
