Stark County’s united arts fund drive makes its goal

ArtsinStark CEO Robb Hankins received several jars of coins from the Alliance City Schools.

                        

On July 1, 23 jars filled with pennies, dimes, quarters and dollar bills arrived at the ArtsinStark offices.

They were donations from students at Parkway Elementary, Rockhill Elementary and Alliance Intermediate schools. It was all part of a final push to get the 2020 annual Arts Campaign to its $1,660,000 goal by July 15.

“We are at 81% of goal with just nine days to go (as of July 1),” ArtsinStark CEO Robb Hankins said.

Bob Belden, chairman and CEO of Belden Brick, is leading the campaign. “In order to make goal, we need lots of small gifts from people who want to help connect the arts to every kid in Stark County.”

The SmArts Program uses art to supercharge learning. More than 33,000 students have been part of SmArts since its beginning. Currently, SmArts is operating in every one of the 17 public school systems in Stark County and all the Catholic middle and elementary schools. In Alliance this year, third-grade students at Rockhill Elementary School were the primary participants.

Actress Janet Jones was to help students understand the elements of storytelling, and visual artist Tim Carmany was using set design to teach math. Of the $1,660,000 being raised by this year’s annual Arts Campaign for all the arts in Stark County, 8% ($133,000) of it will go to putting arts in the schools.

The other 92% will be used to revitalize downtowns, support major arts organizations and operate the Cultural Center for the Arts.

“Our arts organizations, schools, downtowns and cultural center are all in the process of opening back up,” ArtsinStark vice chair Janet Weir Creighton said, “and the dollars raised through the annual Arts Campaign are so critical to making that happen.”
