The Tuscarawas County Art Guild has been offering scholarships for local students interested in pursuing a higher education in the arts field for more than a decade.

This spring a $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to an area high school senior who is looking to enroll into a university or college visual-arts program in the fall. The winner of the scholarship also will receive a one-year membership to the Tuscarawas County Art Guild.

Applications for the scholarship can be downloaded from the Tuscarawas County Art Guild’s website at www.tuscarawascountyartguild.com.

Information and applications also have been sent to local art teachers. A completed application is required, along with the submission of three art pieces of the student’s work. Three letters of reference also must be submitted: two from teachers, one of which should be related to the field of study, and the third can be a person of the applicant’s choosing.

Vivian Mosley, president of the guild, said she wanted to remind possible applicants they can submit these items electronically through her email at aviva11437@gmail.com. Application materials including digital photos of the students’ work must be submitted by April 15.

While electronic submission is preferable, Mosley said applications also can be mailed to P.O. Box 463, New Philadelphia, 44663, with artwork to be dropped off later at the Tuscarawas County Center for the Arts April 22 or 24 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and picked up at a later date.

The scholarship started off in 2001 with a $250 donation from Delores Peters that was given to Mosley to help pay for gas as she commuted to and from Pittsburgh. “And I graduated with honors from The Art Institute of Pittsburgh,” she said. Now as the president, she continues to help others and give back.

In 2006, with the help of a donation from the Marlite Company, two scholarships were awarded, and 15 scholarships have been distributed to local students over the years.

Career paths for the scholarship recipients have varied, including architecture, interior design, art therapy, motion-picture production, photo illustration, applied communications and tattoo art.

The most recent recipient is Brooke Sommers, a 2019 Dover High School graduate who is attending Kent State University, pursuing a career in art education.

The Tuscarawas County Art Guild is a nonprofit organization of local professional and amateur artists and those interested in the advancement of the fine arts. Visual-art forms represented include ceramics, drawing, fiber, jewelry, painting, printing, sculpture, collage, stained glass, photography, watercolor, textile art and wood.

The guild’s art has been exhibited at local shows, businesses and competitions. It is supported through contributions, dues and commissions on sales from shows. Members meet at 7 p.m. the third Tuesday of every month at the Tuscarawas County Center for the Arts, 461 Robinson Ave. SE, New Philadelphia.
