Wayne Center for the Arts announced a collaboration with Dancing Wheels to provide “Dance for Every Body” workshops this spring.

Dancing Wheels is a Cleveland-based professional dance company that integrates the talents of dancers both with and without disabilities. Founded in 1980, the organization is considered one of the premier arts and disabilities organizations in the U.S. and provides performances, school assemblies, residencies and workshops. WCA’s workshops will be led by founding artistic director Mary Verdi-Fletcher and director of outreach Sara Lawrence-Sucato.

The upcoming “Dance for Every Body” workshops are open to participants of all ages and abilities. Each online interactive class will start with a warm-up sequence of dance exercises, continue by learning a dance routine to perform and finish with a dance party allowing each person to express themselves through movement.

WCA artistic director Brian Murphy said he saw a need to provide inclusive dance classes after a friend asked if WCA provided any classes tailored for students with autism. “We currently don’t,” he said, “but we should.”

Murphy considers the “Dance for Every Body” workshops as a starting point for providing more inclusive dance programming at WCA.

More information about the upcoming workshops including dates and times is available on the WCA website at www.wayneartscenter.org or by calling 330-264-2787. More information about Dancing Wheels can be found at www.dancingwheels.org.
