The Wooster Music Club met Nov. 2 at Wesley Hall in the Wooster United Methodist Church. The business meeting was conducted and followed by the evening’s program of music, drama and poetry.

The program began with Judithe Craig reciting the words from the hymn, “Come, Ye Thankful People, Come,” followed by the Wooster Music Club prayer given by Margaret Latta.

Hope Long followed with two pieces on the clarinet: “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring” by Johann Sebastian Bach and “Jupiter Hymn” from “The Planets” by Gustar Holst.

Marilyn Hyde and Day Logan performed a scene from the absurdist play, “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead,” by Tom Stoppard. This existential tragicomedy revolves around the exploits of two minor characters portrayed in Shakespeare’s “Hamlet.” Logan, portraying Rosencrantz, and Hyde, portraying Guildenstern, recreated a comedic scene in which the two confused courtiers play the game of “Questions,” ultimately leading to more confusion and frustration between the two characters.

A quartet consisting of Denice Miller (flute), Annie Gerig (English horn), Cheryl Anderson (harp) and guest musician Alicia Wallace (piano) presented sacred music for Advent. Many churches celebrate this season that includes the four Sundays before Christmas with themed hymns that anticipate the birth of Christ. From this source the group presented six specially arranged versions of familiar and lesser-known Advent hymns traditional to several denominations. Examples include “O Come, O Come Emmanuel,” “Of the Father’s Love Begotten” and “Lo, He Comes with Clouds Descending.”

The program concluded with Judithe Craig reciting a poem titled “Wind and Rain” by Cosette Middleton.

The Wooster Music Club meets the first Tuesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. September through June with the exception of January and February at Wesley Hall in the Wooster United Methodist Church. Guests are welcome.
