Area businesses and individuals will receive special recognition at the Tuscarawas County Chamber of Commerce 61st annual awards celebration on Wednesday, Jan. 22.

Dover Hydraulics of Dover is the recipient of the Large Business of the Year award for organizations with more than 50 employees while Lockport Brewery of Bolivar was selected for Small Business of the Year recognition.

Dover Hydraulics began as a small family-owned business in 1982 by the Robert Sensel family. It has grown exponentially and now also has a second manufacturing facility in South Carolina.

The company has a commitment to its client base and also offers high-paying jobs that require skills at all levels of education, according to its nomination submitted by Kent State Tuscarawas dean and chief administrative officer Dr. Brad Bielski.

Bielski said the many charitable causes supported by the Sensel family include Rainbow Connection, Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital Auxiliary and Kent State Tuscarawas.

Bielski concluded his submission by commending the family and company for its vision and leadership in making Tuscarawas County a better place to live and work.

Owned by Andrew and Lauren Marburger, Lockport Brewery has grown since its opening in late 2016. Moving from its original location to a larger building late last year, the company continues to experiment with new beer flavors and added a larger food menu as well in 2019.

According to the nomination provided by Peter Butler of the Schauer Group, the Marburgers are supporters of the community and other local breweries as well.

The Salvation Army will receive the Organization of the Year award. The nomination submission described how they play a crucial role in assisting those most in need through rental and utility assistance, emergency food assistance, and a five-day-a-week soup kitchen.

The organization also has made significant inroads within the community by establishing an after-school enrichment program during the school year.

Brian Miller, a Dover High School mathematics teacher, has been chosen to receive this year’s Educator of the Year honor. His nomination was submitted by a former Dover High School colleague, Michael Gunther, who previously received this chamber award.

Gunther cited Miller’s dedication to his students, his willingness to lead by chairing the high school mathematics department and his desire to help others as a grader for the national Advanced Placement testing program.

“I am confident that Brian Miller reflects the values that other educators should emulate," Gunther said. "He is a pro in every aspect, one I truly admire and respect and one that I am proud to have taught with for many years at Dover High School.”

Selected as this year’s Tuscarawas Valley Safety Council Member of the Year is Flickinger Piping Company Inc. of Dover. Employees have worked more than 753,000 hours without a lost-time accident during the most recent reporting period.

The honorees will receive their awards at the chamber’s 61st annual awards celebration at the Kent State Tuscarawas Performing Arts Center in New Philadelphia.

The Citizen of the Year, Hall of Fame award recipient, Volunteer of the Year and the Tourism Ambassador of the Year also will be announced that evening.

Sponsors for the event include Abbott Electric, Aultman, Baker Florist, Boltaron, Buckeye Career Center, Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital, First Federal Community Bank, First National Bank of Dennison, Kent State University at Tuscarawas, McInturf Realty, Meteor Sealing Systems, Moore & Neidenthal Inc., Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District, My Museum Tattoo Studio, Schauer Group, Starlight Enterprises Inc., The Budget Newspaper, The Commercial & Savings Bank, Triple “S” Energy, the Tuscarawas County Convention & Visitors Bureau, Tuscarawas County Farm Bureau, the Tuscarawas Valley Safety Council, and Wayne Garage Door Sales and Service.
