The Ohio Swiss Cheese Association announced the winners of the 2019 National Dairy Month contest held June 5 at Pearl Valley Cheese in Fresno.

This contest is the first of three contests held during the year that determine the grand champion and reserve champion cheesemakers for 2019. This contest awarded the cheesemakers for two classifications: Swiss class and open class.

Swiss class winners are Pearl Valley Cheese in first, Guggisberg Cheese Co. of Millersburg in second and Broad Run Cheese of Dover in third.

Open class winners are Guggisberg Cheese in first with Maasdam, Bunker Hill Cheese in second with A2 Jersey and Pearl Valley Cheese in third with Gouda.

Other cheeses entered include a Colby and mild cheddar from Middlefield Original Cheese Co-op, farmers and cheddar from Bunker Hill Cheese, and Colby and marble from Pearl Valley Cheese.

The cheese was judged grade A by Mike Felton, John Jorg and Tom Mueller, former cheesemakers, as well as Dave Yaggi and Paul Chervenak, cheese buyers.

The second of the three 2019 contests, the Ohio State Fair contest, will be held July 10.
