A new agenda was set forth at a recent meeting of the New Philadelphia Business and Community Association, held at Gavin’s on the Square. The organization seeks to be more than just event-based and become one that assists businesses in New Philadelphia and the city.

In opening the meeting, NPBCA interim director Rick Arredondo noted New Philadelphia is gaining a reputation as being business-friendly.

“We can help businesses understand about enterprise zones and other programs available to help them,” Arredondo said. “This should be a focus of the NPBCA. We help business owners get resources. We can help with the best interests of the city and be the arms and legs of the city when they implement a new master plan.”

New Philadelphia Mayor Joel Day also spoke at the meeting about recent improvements. He recognized the arts movement currently going on in the downtown. “Along with the Performing Arts Center, the Little Theatre and the Tuscarawas County Center for the Arts, New Philadelphia has established itself as the cultural center of the county,” Day said.

There are currently many changes and transitions going on in the city, and businesses need to make adjustments now to take advantage of those challenges, according to Arredondo.

“People want interaction with other people, especially with businesses who offer services that can’t be bought on Amazon,” Arredondo said. “With all of us working together, we will see some economic opportunities that we haven’t seen here for a while or ever.”
