Safe internet for the Plain Community

It’s the dawning of the digital era, and the Amish, as always, are out at first light, industrious as ever. Many in the resilient faith-based community approach computers and the internet the same way they would any other tool. They only pick it up when they need it.

The shop computer they might use to render 3-D designs of custom-made, Amish-built furniture does not have an internet connection.

Nevertheless, there are times when the Amish need to get online, and the library isn’t always convenient or the best choice.

That’s where EagleTek Solutions steps in, with a new service providing laptop and Wi-Fi hotspot rentals geared toward the Amish.

“An Amish businessman asked my Amish employee where he could rent a device with internet access,” EagleTek Solutions owner Brian Yoder said. “He was planning a family RV trip out west, and he needed to research and reserve campgrounds. The library wouldn’t work due to time constraints and wanting his wife’s input. That got us thinking about how we could help.”

Yoder was in a position to respond to the needs of the community, whose faith-based values he shares.

EagleTek opened its doors in 2017, engineering software solutions, and, shortly after that, owing to the inclinations of the staff’s talented younger generation, established itself as a graphic and web designer.

With its new endeavor, renting laptops and Wi-Fi hotspots, like every endeavor before it, the family-owned and operated business strives for integrity.

Laptops come equipped with EagleEye Monitoring, a tool designed to keep users accountable. The ever-vigilant software logs a complete activity report of internet activity, giving families peace of mind.

“The internet at the library is unmonitored. EagleEye adds a layer of accountability so temptation doesn’t get in the way of all the good, helpful resources available on the internet,” said Brian Miller, a software engineer at EagleTek Solutions.

The Amish work long hours, and many discover there’s limited computer availability when the library is open. There’s also no guarantee they won’t come face-to-face with objectionable material from a previous user or that any personal information they inadvertently leave behind won’t be used for an objectionable purpose, like identity theft.

EagleTek thoroughly wipes computers clean of all data between users.

As a new day dawns, EagleTek’s made laptop and Wi-Fi hotspot rentals as easy as picking up the phone so the Amish can get back to business as usual.
