A joyous beginning to the holiday season is set to take place at Walnut Creek Christmas in the Village. The candle and tree lighting ceremony, nestled outside in the crisp air of the town center, are a highlight of the season.

This event has been put on by the Walnut Creek Business Association since 2014 (with the exception of 2020 when there were pandemic-related concerns). On Friday, Nov. 12 from 7-8 p.m., the annual event will once again take place on the square of Walnut Creek to celebrate and usher in the very beginning of the Christmas season.

It will be a twinkly showcase for locals and visitors alike. Before the lighting of the tree, there will be group caroling and a Christmas devotional message. An East Holmes fire truck will be onsite to check out, children will receive goodie bags and there will be refreshments for all to round out the festivities.

In addition to the activities on the square, many area businesses will hold their Christmas open houses.

Coblentz Chocolates will have their open house on Thursday, Nov. 11 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Friday, Nov. 12 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Saturday, Nov. 13 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Complimentary chocolate samples and other treats, plus punch and coffee, will be offered. This will be the only time Coblentz has a sale during the holiday season on select chocolate and candy items. Shoppers can sign up to win door prizes that include a deluxe chocolate basket, gift cards and other chocolate gifts.

Carlisle Gifts of Walnut Creek also will have its Christmas open house Nov. 11-13 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., where gifts for all types of people and ages will be available for purchase. There will be a 20% off all Christmas items, hourly door prizes from noon to 6 p.m. (must be present to win), a free gift with any purchase while supplies last and free gift wrapping.

Other local businesses such as The Peddler, bfearless and more will hold their Christmas holiday previews and open houses; bfearless and The Peddler will offer 20% off all day on Thursday and 10% off on Friday and Saturday (must mention discount to receive percentage off on Friday and Saturday).

Jump headlong into the Christmas season by joining this special affair and supporting local small businesses. Come early and dine local, then watch the sun set over the rolling hills of Holmes County. This event will be packed with features you’ll want to mark on your calendar. Be on the lookout for open houses, specials and other events at local Walnut Creek businesses.

The tree and candle-lighting event will be held outside at the Walnut Creek square, 4980 Olde Pump St., Walnut Creek, on Friday, Nov. 12 from 7-8 p.m. Plan to dress accordingly that evening as activities at the square will be held outside. There is no makeup date for inclement weather. There is no price for admission. All local open houses will run Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 11-13.
