This past March COVID-19 restrictions created an opportunity for area pastors to unite via Zoom meetings on the internet.

That has in turn created a new avenue of sharing, and it also resulted in the push to create The Blessing, a prayer gathering that will take place on the courthouse lawn in Millersburg on Saturday, Oct. 10 from 3-4 p.m.

The Blessing is a community collaboration of Holmes County churches, providing an opportunity to seek God in prayer for both the community and the nation. It is nondenominational and is not in any way politically affiliated.

Larry Hasemeyer, pastor at Gateway Community Church in Millersburg, said the concept is nothing new, but it is important to present opportunities for people to unite in prayer for guidance and direction.

“Through our Zoom meetings, we have about 10 pastors who continue to connect regularly, and watching the recent news with everything that is going on in our nation and with all the weirdness COVID has brought with it, we felt it would be ideal to gather area churches together to pray for our community and for our nation,” Hasemeyer said.

Hasemeyer said someone at his church had a dream about community members praying together on the courthouse lawn, which spurred the process of making it a reality. He said with everyone stressing out about COVID-19, the many issues facing people today and even things like sports and school, it was time to try to bring a sense of peace to people.

“Our hope is to bring calm to the chaos,” Hasemeyer said. “Right now we don’t just need encouragement; we need God’s intervention. What we are facing in today’s world is real, and we are all in it together, so we felt that bringing people together for a time of prayer and worship was a step in the right direction.”

The Blessing is open to the public and will include a time of prayer and worship with messages of specific prayer items being presented by 10 area pastors. Hasemeyer said the hope is to build unity and support through area churches. He said if people can only make it for a few minutes, they are still invited to stop and experience the unity and time of recommitment to prayer.

“This is a nondenominational gathering that is no way politically driven,” Hasemeyer said. “We will not make any reference to any candidates or parties because this is an event that is dedicated to God.”
