The Tuscarawas Philharmonic and Adult Chorus will present a free concert titled “Psalms, Hymns and Spiritual Songs”on Palm Sunday, March 25 andunder the direction of conductor Eric Benjamin.

The special event will be at Sacred Heart Church at 139 Third St. in New Philadelphia, and there will be two performances, one at 2 p.m. and the other at 4:30 p.m.

The concert will include choral works excerpted from J.S. Bach’s “St. Matthew Passion,” George Frideric Handel’s “Messiah” and Antonio Vivaldi’s “Gloria.” The Adult Chorus, which includes more than 50 singers from the community, will be joined by Jennifer D’Agostino, mezzo-soprano.

D’Agostino will perform “Jesu, Son Most Sweet and Dear” by Jackson Berkey and will be featured in other works. She is currently the assistant professor of music in voice at Walsh University in North Canton. She is on the board of the New York Singing Teacher’s Association and has performed internationally as a soloist in Rossini’s “Messa di Gloria”in Pesaro, Italy, with Benton Hess and under the baton of Eduoardo Mueller at AIMS in Graz, Austria.

Also on the program is organist Mario Buchanan, who will perform “Toccata in D Minor” by Dietrich Buxtehude and “Organ Concerto in B-flat, op. 7 #6” by Handel.

Buchanan serves as organist at Christ Presbyterian Church in Canton. He is a graduate of the University of Akron and was awarded the Excellence in Accompanying Award and the Dominic Guzzetta Memorial Scholarship. He is an active accompanist, playing for the Summit Chorale Society Candlelight Concerts, the Canton Symphony and the University of Akron Symphony Orchestra.

Because seating is limited, tickets will be required, although they are free. Call WJER Radio at 330-343-7755 for tickets. There are seats still available for both performances, but they are being claimed quickly.
