2020: It’s all in how we look at it

“I just find myself happy with the simple things, appreciating the blessings God gave me.” — DMX.

How has 2020 been? For many of us, it’s been horrible. With COVID-19 it was a year we are merely trying to survive. I heard a radio talk show host say she couldn’t wait for this year to be in the rearview mirror. That is how many of us feel. So much of our way of life has been uprooted. I never dreamed of going to the bank with a mask on, but now we are being asked to. It seems like our life is being ruled by an invisible enemy that is making people sick, both literally and figuratively.

I think we as humans have a problem when it comes to seeing the positive side of life. For the most part, the role of the 24-hour news cycle is mainly negative. Not much positive comes out of it. The news is about getting people’s attention. Sadly, a dog having five puppies it not as attention-getting as a car bomb that killed 175 people (I wish it was). Maybe that is why people keep on reading this: It’s a nice break from the negative around us. We can turn the news off, but we are still reminded of COVID-19 every day.

Life is all about our outlook. How we see life will determine our attitude. It’s simple — have a bad outlook, have a bad attitude. You can’t take in the bad and get good out of it, if we are not looking for the good. Some people will ask, “What good will come out of this year?” A lot. How can I say that? one might be wondering. All the shutdowns have given people more time with family and less time to go out running around. I find it sad many people went right back to living a rushed life when things reopened. My wife and I are spending more time with family and with each other. We are enjoying God and nature more.

I want to try something right now. I have never done this before, but here goes nothing. I want everyone to go get a pen and paper. Go on. I will wait here. Now for some of you, this is going to be really out there, but just bear with me. I want you to write down five things you like about 2020. I know many people are questioning my sanity right about now. However, it will take our minds off of our problems and put it on what is right.

Here are my five things: My marriage is stronger, I had more time with family, I am reading my Bible more and am closer to God, I am taking the time to go on walks and drives, and I slowed my life down altogether and am finally enjoying the little things in life more. Now it is your turn.

We take for granted the little things in life because they are always there. Take a moment and think about what you have. When you do that, 2020 won’t be such a bad year after all.
