Feeding the hungry local birds

Feeding the hungry local birds

Our local birds must have been starving. Every other day I must refill our bird feeders. They are not small bird feeders, but our local avian population manages to empty every one of them within 48 hours.

Our house loves the birds that flock around her. She is delighted to have such lovely company. She is especially fond of the gold finches and the hummingbirds. I have to admit those are my favorites too.

It is just such a treat to wake up in the morning to beautiful bird song. Actually the hummingbirds don’t seem to sing a great deal, but they keep us enthralled with their humming and chasing each other about.

Tiny as they are, those birds are super aggressive. One attempted to chase my Taller Half away from the feeder. Taller Half didn’t even notice the little bird, so that act of bravery was totally wasted.

The only problem we have encountered keeping our bird populations well-fed is the weeds that sprout from the seeds that fall to the ground. I spent about 30 minutes yesterday yanking bird seed weeds from under the feeders. It appears every single seed that fell to the ground under those feeders sprouted.

Have I mentioned our house is extremely fond of well-kept, weed-free gardens? Weeds in her gardens are an anathema to her.

Next year we plan to have a few more gardens, which will attract a larger bird population. That will result in more work, but I do believe we can handle it. We might be able to recruit a granddaughter as a weeding executive. The pay won’t be great, but it will be in cookies. Chocolate chip cookies should be worth a pile of weeds.
