Skating our way through a wet winter

Global warming is a serious problem for our Mother Earth. It is causing all sorts of problems all over our country. Vicious storms have ravaged some states, leaving huge destruction in both life and property. Weather reports are now received with trepidation, and most folks make sure their home insurance is current.
In our area we have, so far, been spared dangerous storms, for which we are most thankful. And we also have, so far, been spared the snow that winter usually brings to cover our roads, roofs and walks. Can’t say we adults miss having to shovel that white stuff, but our children constantly complain about not being able to build snowmen or ride their sleds down the few hills surrounding us. Evidently, our offspring believe their parents are capable of preventing the snowfall for them to enjoy. But if the amount of rain continues at its current rate, our children will soon be paddling around on our lawn lakes.
Our dogs aren’t happy with the almost daily rain. Getting wet isn’t one of their favorite things. At the rate they are going, they will bring enough mud into the house to start a garden. Our house abhors mud on her floors, especially on her rugs. We have tried to get our pets to wear dog boots when they go outside, but they aren’t having it. My Taller Half has become an expert removing mud from our floors. Can’t say he enjoys that chore. In fact, his language is rather colorful the entire time he cleans. In spite of his vocalizations, he is a great mud cleaner.
Despite our disappointed children and muddy-footed dogs, global warming has provided our area with a much warmer winter, which our utility bills are reflecting. That is no guarantee the rest of the winter won’t produce icy cold winds, lots of snow and uncomfortably cold temperatures, but as of right now, this is the warmest Christmas season we can remember. Our main concern at present is should Mother Nature decide to send us our usual freezing winter temperatures, our lawn will turn into an ice rink — and we don’t ice skate!
