Poor memories cancel out our good intentions

Our house would really like it if everyone coming inside would remove their shoes or boots as the case may be. However, despite our being aware of our house’s preference, we forget. So do our guests. As a consequence the rug protecting the carpet at our front door has a thankless job.

We have honestly given it our best efforts. But our poor memories cancel out our good intentions. When we are wearing boots, it is easier to remember to remove them and walk about in our socks. But taking off regular shoes is another matter.

A few days ago we did some yard work, got a bit disheveled, just a tad leafy and muddy, ran into the house to warm up, and totally forgot to remove our dirty shoes. Our house was shocked.

Her recently shampooed carpet showed our thoughtlessness. We were so apologetic, but those apologies did not remove the muddy footprints on that formerly clean carpet.

We tried some spot cleaning, but the mess was bigger than a spot. Our abode was most unforgiving and demanded a total shampooing. Fortunately for us all, we have a big, old carpet-cleaning machine, the operative word being “old."

Despite our frantic efforts, that elderly piece of equipment refused to turn on. So a call was made, the professional carpet cleaners came, a wonderful job was done and a check was written.

After that expensive experience, you would think we’d have learned our lesson. Sadly, not so. We forgot about our dogs.

We all went for a lovely walk, and while enjoying being out and about, one pup rolled in some raccoon leavings. We failed to notice that trick until we got home.

The pup ran into the house and rolled on the freshly cleaned carpet. The house actually quaked, my Taller Half made unrepeatable oaths and I cried.
