Do we notice the people around us?

“Somebody that you look at, but never really see.” — Reba McEntire
I was getting headaches, so I went to my doctor. He ordered a CAT scan and told me to make a eye doctor appointment. I questioned, “How will an eye doctor help me?” He explained that as our eyes work overtime, one of the side effects of all that hard work is headaches. My CAT scan was fine. In fact, I was told that my brain was strong. My eye appointment revealed that I needed reading glasses.
Fast forward to a year later. I went for my annual checkup, and it revealed that I no longer just need reading glasses. I need glasses full-time. At first, I was skeptical. Because of my cerebral palsy, I didn’t know how I could adjust to them, but so far, I really like them. It is so nice to see what I am typing without having to increase the size of the type. I didn’t know what I was missing. It’s like a whole new world.
I wondered how many people would notice when I went to work. Not many people said anything. The woman who used to be my supervisor told me she liked my glasses. I let her know she was the first person to notice. She asked me if everybody had their heads up in the air.
How can many of us be self-absorbed? I asked myself the same question because I know I can be. When we have a big decision to make or someone really gets under our skin, we all can think about the situation over and over again in our minds. It is so easy to let other opinions get to us or be consumed with what we are going to do about our problems.
I found that if I help others and turn my attention outward instead of inward, my problems don’t seem that big anymore. The world will not stop for us, so maybe we can help out at a church, at school, at a nonprofit or visit an old friend. The world is a big place. Someone will need our help.
We need to put our situation in the right place. So many times, after I helped people, I could look differently at my situation. Try it. It may rock your world.
