Four Wooster High School students qualified as finalists in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program. Seniors Owen Holt-Frank, Olivia VanSickle, Sophia VanSickle and Rheanna Velasquez are finalists in the 65th annual National Merit Scholarship Program held by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

“We are extremely proud to have four National Merit Scholarship Program finalists representing Wooster High School,” WHS principal Tyler Keener said. “This recognition is proof of the determination and hard work these students exhibit in their academics, extracurricular activities and involvement throughout the Wooster community.”

Over 1.6 million juniors in about 22,000 high schools entered the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2018 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

To quality, finalists must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay, and earn an SAT score that confirms the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test.

Holt-Frank, Olivia and Sophia VanSickle, and Velasquez will continue on to compete for one of 7,500 National Merit Scholarships in the spring, worth more than $31 million.

“On behalf of the Wooster City School District, we wish them the very best as they continue on to compete for National Merit Scholarships,” WCS Superintendent Dr. Michael Tefs said. “We are so very proud of them and all that they have accomplished. They are an intellectually talented group who have achieved in the top 1% nationally. Their accomplishments are remarkably impressive.”

The 2020 National Merit Scholarship winners will be announced in four nationwide news releases beginning in April and concluding in July.
