On Jan. 26 two Mock Trial teams from Claymont High School competed in the Ohio Center for Law-Related Education Mock Trial district competition held at the Tuscarawas County Courthouse.

Eleven students, guided by Judge James J. Ong and attorney Jeff Merklin, assumed the roles of attorneys and witnesses to participate in an unscripted, simulated trial. This year’s case examined the application of the Excessive Fines Clause of the Eighth Amendment, focusing on property forfeiture resulting from a crime. Since October the teams have been analyzing legal principles and preparing arguments in support of their positions.

Each team competed in two trials against opposing schools. They were required to win both trials or the majority of their judges’ ballots to advance to the next level of competition. Claymont’s orange team will advance to the regional competition on Feb. 16.

Several students were recognized for their performance. Senior Gemma Dotts was awarded an Outstanding Attorney Award. Junior Malaika Douglas and freshman Ashley Yang were honored with the Outstanding Witness Award.

Claymont’s orange team consists of Ellie Baker, Cora Dotts, Gemma Dotts, Malaika Douglas, Cambria Edwards, Zane Kuczirka and Ashley Yang. Claymont’s brown team is made up of Regan Buehler, Jasmin Davidson, Braxtyn Myers, Tessa Palmer, Neveah Perez, Brinley Poland, Selena Spellman and Chloe Tufford. The teams are advised by teacher Heather Dotts.
