Retired Richland County Juvenile Court Judge Ronald Spon will be the next speaker in Ashland University’s Dauch College of Business and Economics McKnight Life Calling Lecture Series on Jan. 30 at 7 p.m.

Spon’s presentation, “A Life Worth Living,” is free and open to the public and will take place in room 115 of the Dauch College on the AU campus.

After 26 years on the bench — first in the Domestic Relations Division and then in the Juvenile Division of the Richland County Court of Common Pleas — Spon retired in March of 2019. A graduate of the Ohio State University and the Ohio Northern University Claude Pettit College of Law, Spon dedicated 42 years of his life to public service including time spent as the City of Mansfield’s assistant city solicitor and as an assistant Richland County prosecuting attorney.

It was by happenstance that Spon came to the Juvenile Court, filling in for a colleague in the prosecutor’s office who had become ill. But once in the court, he said he felt called to pursue a career as a Juvenile Court judge, and in an interview prior to his retirement, he said he has always had a heart for broken people.

In his presentation the retired judge will discuss the importance of perspective, of building on a solid foundation, and experimental and experiential dynamics as a way forward, as well as practical considerations.

The McKnight Life Calling Lecture Series is made possible through the generosity of the McKnight Family Endowment, which also supports the Occupational Life Calling courses at AU.
