The Kno-Ho-Co Ashland CAC Head Start program is a recipient of a Child Abuse Prevention mini-grant offered through the Holmes County Family and Children First Council.

The focus of the grant is for community agencies to address one or more of the nationally recognized Protective Factors including creating parental resilience, nurturing social connections, gaining knowledge of parenting and or child development, instilling social/emotional competence in children, and helping families build strong support systems for times of need. These protective factors strengthen families and can reduce the likelihood of child abuse and neglect in the home.

Kno-Ho-Co Ashland CAC received the funding by proposing to purchase sets of “1-2-3 Magic Parenting” curriculum to be made available at each of its five Head Start centers as Lending Libraries for Head Start parents. The proposal also provides for two sets of the parenting curriculum to be given to the Holmes County Public Library so any parent in the community can check out the materials.

Written by Dr. Thomas W. Phelan, a registered PhD clinical psychologist, the “1-2-3 Magic Parenting” curriculum offers parents the tools they need to address their child’s misbehavior and to build stronger relationships within their families. Each set of curriculum contains books on parenting with accompanying DVDs on many common problems facing parents of young and adolescent children. Topics covered include getting children to stop unwanted behaviors, encouraging children to start good behaviors, how to deal with tantrums and how to help children with ADHD.

The director of the Holmes County Public Library, Paula Cicconetti, said they will have the books and DVDs available to borrow as soon as they can be processed, placing one set at the main library in Millersburg and the other set at the East Branch in Walnut Creek.
