Recently 119 local students and their families came to Save & Serve Thrift Shop in Millersburg for their back-to-school clothes shopping. The event was part of Love INC’s Back to School Bash with the goal of helping to ease the financial burden on families.

Save & Serve donated funds for new underwear and socks that were available for families to select and purchase for a small fee. In addition the thrift shop was open exclusively for these families to shop for clothing and other items as they prepare for the school year.

As part of the event, participants were invited to take a few minutes to help pack school kits for Mennonite Central Committee as a way of giving back to others. Items included notebooks, pencils, rulers and other school supplies that were packed into a drawstring cloth bag and distributed to families whose lives have been disrupted by war or disaster in places like Jordan, Ukraine and Zambia.

In addition to the event at Save & Serve, families also could get haircuts from several local salons and shoes collected by local churches.

“It’s an interwoven web of churches and the community working together to make back to school manageable for families in our community,” said Vicki Conn, director of Love INC.
