The Holmes County Education Foundation is accepting scholarship applications for academic year 2019-20. The online scholarship applications can only be found on the HCEF website at www.hcef.net.

The new online scholarship application system offers a matching criteria search in which students may apply to multiple scholarships for which they may be eligible. Additional information including scholarship descriptions and award amounts also are located on the website.

The scholarships are primarily based on financial need. However, academic promise and other noneconomic criteria may be considered. Applicants who complete the HCEF scholarship application also will be considered for the newly endowed Spirit Hiland Scholarship and Spirit West Holmes Scholarship, which are not available to apply for directly.

Scholarship applications are only accepted once per academic year. Be sure to apply during the application period if you intend to enroll in an accredited higher education institution for either the fall or spring semester.

Graduating high school seniors, adult students currently or previously enrolled in college, graduate school students, home-schooled students, or other individuals pursuing further education who reside in Holmes County and/or have graduated from a Holmes County high school are eligible to apply.

The application deadline is Friday, April 12, and completed applications must be submitted with all required attachments by 5 p.m. on that day. College students currently receiving Education Foundation scholarships were emailed a renewal scholarship application link in December. Those students should only apply via the email link and not apply as a new student.

Additional information on financial aid and outside scholarships is posted on the Holmes County Education Foundation’s Facebook page. “Like” them to stay informed.

In addition, beginning Jan. 4, the Holmes County Education Foundation will accept applications for those interested in the Raymond J. and Louella F. Patterson Scholarship for Teachers. The new scholarship application can be found and completed online on the HCEF website at www.hcef.net by clicking on the Nonprofits and Public Sector tab.

The Patterson Scholarship for Teachers was created by the late Betty Lauber and her husband Thomas to memorialize Betty’s parents, Raymond J. and Louella F. Patterson. The purpose of the program is to enhance the quality of education by helping teachers receive advanced training and develop additional skills that will improve their ability to work with students in the classroom. To be eligible, individuals must currently be employed by a Holmes County school and have at least two years of classroom teaching experience. The scholarship can be used for study or training in the following areas:

—Study toward an advanced degree at an accredited college or graduate school. The study program should be in education or in a subject area that can be taught in the classroom that will lead to an advanced degree and not part of a video or internet program.

—Special courses in specific subjects or technical training in specific areas, which are directly related to teachers’ classroom subject or area of interaction with students.

—Participation in specific teacher training opportunities, which will enhance the teacher’s ability to work with students in the classroom.

The application deadline is Friday, April 12, and applications must be submitted by 5 p.m. on that day.
