During a special ceremony, the Tuscarawas County Board of Developmental Disabilities presented the Star of Excellence Award to Tonia Johnson at Claymont City School District for her efforts in supporting students with developmental disabilities.

The Star of Excellence Award is given to a staff member in a local school district in Tuscarawas County who demonstrates leadership in the field of developmental disabilities by working to improve results for students with disabilities.

The staff member who is nominated for this award promotes partnerships and collaboration, provides in-person student instruction and support, and provides continuous educational services to students in their local school district and the TuscBDD Starlight School Specialized Service Program.

Johnson is committed to the growth and development of her students. “She goes above and beyond to make sure that they are learning new skills that add value to their lives and academics to take them into their future,” said Benjamin Kolbrich, TuscBDD Starlight School behavior support supervisor. “She has been known to say, ‘I am constantly thinking of their future and how I can make that better.’ She goes above and beyond what is asked of her.

“If at any time she is unsure of what she’s doing or feels something isn’t working, she will ask questions and talk it through until she is comfortable with it. Her students’ success in our program is largely due to her dedication and willingness to learn all she can about behavior interventions and strategies to correctly implement them in the school setting.”
