The Wooster branch of the American Association of University Women announced its annual scholarship awards to three Wayne County women who have returned to school to pursue their college degrees.

This year’s recipients are Lisa Elder and Morgan Stein from Wooster and Karen Wald from Dalton.

Wald is pursuing her Bachelor of Nursing degree online through Ohio University. This is her third scholarship award through Wooster AAUW, and she expects to complete her degree this coming school year. She currently works at Aultman Orrville Hospital as a registered nurse.

Elder is pursuing her business degree online through DeVry University. This is her second AAUW scholarship award. She currently is a corporate paralegal at Critchfield, Critchfield & Johnston Ltd. in Wooster.

Stein is pursuing her associate degree in nursing from Bryant and Stratton College and currently works as a certified clinical medical assistant at Wooster Urology. All three women have returned to school after a delay in their education.

Founded in 1881, the AAUW, a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization, advocates for fair pay and equal opportunities for women and girls. As part of this effort, the Wooster branch provides scholarships to women whose post-secondary education has been interrupted by family or financial issues.

Working with the local Kiwanis Club, the Wooster AAUW branch each year holds a community used book sale to raise money for the scholarships. This book sale is the culmination of a year-long effort to collect, sort and price thousands of books that are sold over four days in late September at the Wayne County Fairgrounds.

This year’s AAUW book sale is scheduled for Sept. 30 through Oct. 3. For more information about Wooster AAUW and its activities, go to wooster-oh.aauw.net.

Wooster AAUW also welcomes cash donations directly to its scholarship fund, which is administered by the Wayne County Community Foundation in Wooster. Through the website at www.waynecountycommunityfoundation.org, individuals and businesses can make donations to the Wooster AAUW Scholarship Fund and learn more about the many scholarships offered to Wayne County adults and high school graduates.

Donations also may be mailed to Wooster AAUW Scholarship Fund, Wayne County Community Foundation, 517 N. Market St., Wooster, OH 44691.
