Two hunters were last seen around 1 p.m. on security footage at Clendening Lake Marina on Sunday, Nov. 15. They were reported missing late Sunday night.

Search efforts began at approximately 3:30 a.m. for two men, both from Michigan, who were in the area hunting. MWCD Rangers launched a boat and began the search by water while Ohio State Highway Patrol assisted with the search by air. By daylight, search crews arrived on scene to assist with the search on land, on water and by air.

Friends of the missing hunters arrived later in the day on Sunday, and when they did not return to the cabin where they were staying, they called to report the hunters missing.

Agencies from around the region arrived on scene to assist with the search including MWCD Rangers, Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Harrison County Sheriff’s Department, Ohio State Highway Patrol, and Bowerston, Freeport, Rush Township, Scio and Washington Township fire departments. Perry Township Search and Rescue arrived on scene with search dogs, and Dan Yoder and family led a search on horseback.

Initially, it was uncertain if the men were missing on land or if they had launched a boat to access an area across the lake. By 2 p.m., the bodies of both men were found near the shoreline. James “Bud” Miller, Jr., age 63 from Rives Junction, Michigan, and James McKibbin, age 43 from Parma, Michigan, were recovered from Clendening Lake.

“Our sincere condolences go out to the families who lost their loved ones today,” said Craig Butler, executive director from MWCD. “Especially as we head into hunting season, we cannot stress enough that everyone exercise caution whether on land or on the water. Let someone know where you are, whether you’re hiking or hunting, and always wear a life jacket when on the water.”
