The Alzheimer’s Association Greater East Ohio Area Chapter is seeking new members for its Wooster caregiver support group.

The Alzheimer’s caregiver support group in Wooster will return to in-person meetings on Aug. 18 at 1 p.m. The group meets at the Wooster United Methodist Church, 243 N. Market St. Those interested in attending should call Linsay Brandenstein, Alzheimer’s Association program manager, at 234-414-0036 or email lebrandenstein@alz.org. The Wooster support group is one of 25 support groups the chapter offers.

Support groups allow caregivers to share tips, gain a listening ear and get guidance on caring for their loved one. All support groups are open to the public, are led by a trained facilitator and meet once a month.

“There is power in the ability to hear how other caregivers deal with certain situations. Because Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive disease, the level of care needed will increase, and we offer support groups because no one should face Alzheimer’s or any other dementia alone,” Brandenstein said.

Alzheimer’s is a progressive, fatal brain disease that kills nerve cells and tissues in the brain, affecting an individual’s ability to remember, think, plan, speak and walk. In the United States, more than 6 million people have the disease.

For immediate assistance and questions, the association’s 24/7 Helpline is available at 800-272-3900. To learn more about the Greater East Ohio Area Chapter’s caregiver programs and resources, contact Brandenstein or visit www.alz.org/eastohio.
