Letter to the Editor:

As many structural needs and the overcrowding of New Philadelphia’s school buildings surface, another issue long in the shadows needs attention. This matter has become the “norm,” not to neglect, but due to the efficiency of the food service and custodial staffs. Those staffs are making the best out of what is at hand.

This issue is the transition ritual at lunch time. The gymnasiums in the elementary and middle schools serve two purposes: one for physical-education instruction and the other for cafeterias. Moments prior to lunch, the staff works furiously to convert the gyms into high-volume eateries. Most physical-education classes are cut short to allow setup and time for students to enjoy lunch. Even that falls short for students last in line.

Satellite stations are arranged to serve food that is prepped, cooked, packaged and shipped out every day from our high school cafeteria. This is a task done with pride and efficiency but still can’t achieve what is deserved.

Our middle school accommodates three lunch-time transitions with an average of 230 students in each. Tables are supplied from various locations. They are cleaned and prepped for the next crowd of hungry children.

Our elementary schools play the very same game but at a smaller scale with less space. Often the younger students don’t consider the small amount of time allotted and do more socializing than eating. If this occurs, they lack much-needed nutrition for the remainder of the school day.

A campus with new buildings is the solution. Physical education can be taught in the gymnasiums, and lunches can be prepared and served in cafeterias. Rushed lunches would be eliminated, and time to work on soft skills such as manners and conversation can be given needed attention.

Please vote for Issue 4 on the March 17 primary ballot.
