Dover student urges action against SB1
Letter to the Editor,
I am a student at Dover High School, and I’m not old enough to vote yet, but my future in college is controlled by the state legislature. They have passed a piece of legislation called SB1.
SB1 will censor what will be taught at Ohio universities. That includes diversity, equity and inclusion or DEI. SB1 also is an attack on freedom of speech. It not only limits what can be taught at Ohio universities or silences the people, but also limits universities’ staff rights.
If a really good professor doesn’t have the power to ask for better wages, they won’t stay at that university. They will move somewhere they have better bargaining power for better pay. And if those professors aren’t in Ohio, we won’t have as many young people coming and attending our universities, and we won’t get the benefit of young people working and learning in Ohio.
This piece of legislation was passed even though many more people testified against it than for it. Well over 800 people testified against this and well under 100 testified for it. It went into effect June 27, 2025.
SB1 will affect Ohio universities in a very bad way. More information is available at www.ohsb1petition.com.
