Not only will people be able to eat homemade authentic Ukrainian borscht, but also they will have a chance to take home a handmade pottery bowl on Sunday, Oct. 23 from 5-7 p.m. at the Kidron Community Center, 4434 Kidron Road, at the Empty Bowl Fundraiser for Ukrainian Refugees.

The first 100 people through the line will be able to choose a bowl to take home, some made by artists who have pottery all over the world, and the borscht served in the bowls will be made by Katya and Nataliia Murza.

Ukrainian borscht is a very popular national food made by every family in the Ukraine. It’s a soup of beef and a variety of vegetables including potatoes, onions, cabbage and red beets, which gives it a deep red color. Panpushky bread buns will be served alongside.

“We decided to do a fundraiser because it’s one way we could support our friends from Ukraine and the people there. We love good pottery and good food, so why not combine them?” said Kelsey Hochstetler, one of many who is helping plan the event.

Donations by cash or check will be accepted at the door and will go to support a Ukrainian nonprofit that offers free school meals to people in need.

Six potters spread over the U.S. also are helping make this event possible.

People can come and go as they please between 5-7 p.m. and are asked to RSVP on Eventbright.
