The Tuscarawas County Board of Commissioners have nominated Healthy Tusc for the 2019 Dr. Nathan Davis Award.

Recognized nationally, founded in 1989 and named after Dr. Nathan Davis, who was the founder of the American Medical Association, the awards seek to recognize those who have made significant contributions promoting the art and science of medicine and the betterment of public health.

Because of the hard work and dedication Healthy Tusc has demonstrated in the area, it has been nominated for the Outstanding Non-Governmental Public Service Award. Inaugurated in 2017, the award recognizes organizations that are not directly part of a government agency or an individual who holds a government office.

Healthy Tusc is a collaborative effort of community partners promoting policy, environmental and system changes across the community and state and in turn increasing access to healthy food and physical activity in the area.

Healthy Tusc seeks to create an environment for safe, physical activity; increased access to healthy food and physical activity in the community; and empowering individuals through education, especially children, to make the right decisions.

Regarding their health and nutrition, Healthy Tusc strives to allow families to be healthier by encouraging parents to be healthier at work, establishing healthier vending options in public areas, and creating and promoting public awareness of the mission of Healthy Tusc.

Healthy Tusc has been an active member in the community, demonstrated by its continued dedication to events and activities such as the United Way Color Run and Rock ‘N’ Run, Healthy Kids Day at the YMCA, holding health screenings at the Tuscarawas County Health Department, sponsoring events such as the YMCA and Harbor House golf outings, and encouraging county-wide walking programs such as the Walk to School program and holding hikes.

At TUSCParks trails and parks, Healthy Tusc has initiated the Tuscarawas County Farmers’ Markets and hosted the 2011 Healthy Tusc Summit: Building a Healthier Community Together.

Commissioner Chris Abbuhl said that since its founding Healthy Tusc has routinely demonstrated a strong commitment to the betterment of public health and the development of nutritional and physical activities in Tuscarawas County. Because of this dedication and outstanding service to the community, he said he is proud to nominate Healthy Tusc for this honor.
