The Holmes County District Public Library has events and programs scheduled for October.

                        

The Holmes County District Public Library will host a variety of events and programs throughout October. For more information or to register, visit the library or call 330-674-5972.

Teens can pick up an October craft kit at the Holmes Central Library to make a graveyard dirt pudding cup. To celebrate National Book Month, visitors to the Holmes Central Library or East Branch Library can fill out a ticket for a chance to win weekly prizes throughout October.

The Smokey Bear Reading Challenge will begin Tuesday, Oct. 1 and run through Saturday, Nov. 16. Children age 4-12 can participate by reading and completing activities to earn a certificate and a book. Registration is required.

On Tuesday, Oct. 1 at 5:30 p.m., Bridget Hatcher of SSIP Insurance Partners will present Medicare 101 & Changes in 2025 at the Holmes Central Library. Attendees will learn about upcoming Medicare changes, and registration is required.

Story time for children age 2-5 will be held Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. at the East Branch Library on Oct. 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30. The Holmes Central Library will offer story time on Fridays at 10:30 a.m. on Oct. 4, 11, 18 and 25. A Little Learners Playgroup will follow at 11 a.m. on those same Fridays, offering activities for kids up to age 5 to promote reading and social skills.

On Thursday, Oct. 3 at 6 p.m., families with school-age kids can join Amy Bue, the co-founder of Project Zoobook and a teacher, at the Holmes Central Library as she speaks about her experiences as a Bigfoot researcher. She also will share stories and explain her field research equipment and love for a good mystery. Registration is required.

The mikeroweWORKS Foundation Program will kick off Monday, Oct. 7 at 5:30 p.m. at the Holmes Central Library. This four-session workshop, led by OSU Extension Services educator Ella Lorentz, is for high school students and will run monthly through January. Registration is required.

Families with children age 6-12 are invited to the Book Quest Club on Tuesday, Oct. 8 at 5:30 p.m. at the Holmes Central Library. This event, themed “Boo-tastic Reads!,” will feature a variety of books and a Halloween-themed bookmark-making activity. Registration is required.

On Saturday, Oct. 12 from 11 a.m. to noon, the Holmes Central Library will host the Paws to Read - Smokey Bear Celebration in honor of Smokey Bear’s 80th birthday. Families can visit the children’s department to read to therapy dogs from Caring Therapy Canines.

Muffin Mania will be held Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 6 p.m. at the Holmes Central Library. Kate Shumaker, an OSU Extension Services educator, will demonstrate muffin-baking techniques, and participants will sample various recipes. Registration is required.

On Saturday, Oct. 19, the Holmes Central Library will hold a family movie matinee at 11 a.m., featuring Disney/Pixar’s “Inside Out 2.” Attendees are encouraged to bring a comfy chair or blanket, snacks and a drink. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Trang Moreland, author and businesswoman, will share her life story and cookbook journey on Monday, Oct. 21 at 5:30 p.m. at the Holmes Central Library. Registration is required.

The Friends of the Library Fall Book Sale will be held Friday, Oct. 25 and Saturday, Oct. 26 at the Holmes Central Library’s meeting room. Members of the Friends group can attend a preview sale on Thursday, Oct. 24 from 5-7 p.m. The sale will feature a selection of gently used books and materials, with prices posted at the event.

Adults are invited to a book discussion at the Holmes Central Library on Tuesday, Oct. 29 at 1 p.m., featuring “The Good Earth” by Pearl S. Buck. A second book discussion will be held the same day at 6 p.m. at Jitters Coffee House in Millersburg, focusing on Agatha Christie’s “And Then There Were None.”

The month will conclude with a Boo Bash on Thursday, Oct. 31 at 5:30 p.m. at the Holmes Central Library. Families with children up to age 12 can enjoy trick-or-treating, a storywalk featuring the book “Creepy Pair of Underwear,” a short cartoon and spooky games. Registration is required.
