Lady Knights volleyball breaks into the win column

Knights golfer Hunter Ellis continues to have a strong season in leading the way for the West Holmes golf team.


The West Holmes Lady Knights volleyball team got in the win column recently by taking down Mansfield Madison 3-1. WHHS recorded a 25-18, 25-23, 19-25, 25-20 victory to win it in four.

Leading the way for the Lady Knights was Megan Jones, who had nine kills, five blocks, 22 digs and two service aces. She got plenty of help from Nadia Rouse, who had 22 digs and nine assists. Harmony Mast had 32 digs and five assists; Lauren Jones recorded three kills, a block, nine digs and four aces; Brenna Barnes had three blocks, four digs and three assists; and Brynlee Reed added two aces, six digs and a kill.


The Lady Pirates of Garaway fell on the volleyball court as the team continues to try to find its groove. Garaway lost a tough five-game match to Ridgewood, falling 25-17, 23-25, 25-23, 24-26, 15-9.

Hard-hitting Brooklyn Frey drilled 16 kills, adding one block and four service aces, while Lizzie Mullet recorded 42 assists and three service aces. Brooke Werker added 16 kills and three aces.

On Saturday, Aug. 31 Garaway fell to Coshocton 2-1 in another tight battle, falling 25-22, 23-25, 25-23. In the second half of their tri-match, the Lady P’s dropped a 2-0 contest to Philo in yet another barn-burner, this time falling 26-24, 25-22.

Boys Soccer

A nice first half led the West Holmes Knights boys soccer team to a 4-2 victory over Tusky Valley.

The Knights took a 2-0 lead into the intermission as the defense played well. Goals from Jackson Oliver and Curtis Wagner gave the Knights the lead at the half, and in the second half, scores from Tyler Masters and Grant Miller offset Trojans’ Sam Ray, who knocked in both goals.

West Holmes outshot Tusky Valley 26-13 and took five corner kicks to the Trojans’ three.

The Hiland boys soccer team squared off with a familiar foe in Mansfield Christian and came away with a tough 1-0 road victory.

Girls Tennis

The WHHS Lady Knights tennis team fell to New Philadelphia 4-1. The lone win for West Holmes came at first doubles, where Natalie Strouse and Madison Baker churned out a 4-6, 6-4, 10-8 victory over Sophie Troyer and Alexis Mamula. Maddie Troyer dealt Lady Knight Maggie Taylor a 6-1, 7-5 loss at first singles as the Quakers improved to 7-2.


Garaway’s boys golf team continued to play at a very high level in downing Malvern 144-189. Senior Ethan Miller paved the way to victory by shooting a 34 while Rendall Weaver added a 35, Zehnder Gibson shot a 36 and Michael Blauch tacked on a 39. The Pirates then downed Buckeye Trail 152-209. Weaver carded a 36, Miller fired a 37, Beachy shot a 38, and Gibson and Blauch racked up 41s for the Pirates.

The West Holmes Knights were tripped up by a talented Waynedale team at Fire Ridge Golf Course on Wednesday, Aug. 28. The Golden Bears recorded a 173 to the Knights’ 189.

West Holmes was led by Hunter Ellis, who shot a team-medalist round of 42, while teammate Brice Hunter was right behind him with a 43. Brody Allen carded a 46, and freshman Kenton Baker added a 58 to round at West Holmes’ team score.

West Holmes’ middle school team scored well but still fell to a tough Indian Valley team. The Knights shot a 163 while the Braves carved out a 150 at the par-3 Five Waters Golf Course. Leading the way for the young Knights was Grady Toye, who fired a 34, while Trey Baker added a 40, Kenzie Woods fired a 43 and Garrett Fowler added a 46.
