Learn how to manage your concerns about falling down

Fear of falling can be just as dangerous as falling itself. People who develop this fear often limit their activities, which can result in severe physical weakness, making the risk of falling even greater. Many older adults also experience increased isolation and depression when they limit their interactions with family and friends.

A Matter of Balance can help people improve their quality of life and remain independent. A Matter of Balance is designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase activity levels among older adults. Participants learn to set realistic goals to increase activity, change their environment to reduce fall risk factors, and learn simple exercises to increase strength and balance. This is an eight-week class, meeting once a week for two hours.

The Holmes County General Health District will offer an informational open house on A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns About Falls on Tuesday, July 25 from 10-11 a.m. at the Troyer House, Walnut Hills Senior Living Community, 4770 Olde Pump St., Walnut Creek. Meet the instructor and hear a past participant speak on the benefits of this program.

A Matter of Balance will then begin Tuesdays, Aug. 1 through Sept. 19 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Troyer House. There is no cost to this program. A workbook will be provided, and refreshments will be served.
