Local communities plan Memorial Day services

A number of Memorial Day services will be held in Holmes County.

                        

Numerous Memorial Day services will be held around the Holmes County area, including:

KILLBUCK/GLENMONT — Killbuck and Glenmont will hold Memorial Day services on Monday, May 30.

Killbuck’s parade will begin at 10 a.m. from the VFW and will be led by the VFW Post 7079 members and the West Holmes marching band. They will march to the Killbuck Cemetery to hold memorial services. The national anthem will be provided by Toni Shreve and the West Holmes marching band.

Glenmont’s parade will begin at 11:30 a.m. from the Glenmont school building and will be led by the VFW Post 7079 members and the West Holmes marching band.

The guest speaker for both memorial services will be Senior Master Sgt. Vanessa Young.

Young served 23 years in the United States Air Force. She entered the service in 1993 and filled a variety of roles over the course of the next two decades. Although primarily a medic through her initial training, she also served in multiple special duty assignments.

As a staff sergeant, she was the senior military training leader for the 338th Training Detachment at Fort Gordon, Georgia, providing leadership and discipline for more than 425 airmen-in-training. Upon promotion to technical sergeant, she was selected to lead the Air Force’s Pharmacy Technician Program at Sheppard Air Force Base. Here, she prepared the course for transition into the Military Education and Training Campus at Fort Sam Houston and rewrote the foundational curriculum for the Department of Defense program.

In subsequent roles she has served as a superintendent, an executive officer and an inspector general. Additionally, she was the flight chief of base medical services at the National Security Agency’s largest field site at Royal Air Force Menwith Hill, United Kingdom.

Young is married to Master Sgt. Bill Young (retired), and they have three children and one new grandchild.

WINESBURG — The annual Memorial Day Parade and Memorial Service will be held in Winesburg on Monday, May 30. The parade will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the water tower, and will travel through Winesburg to the Westlawn Cemetery where the Memorial Service will be held.

All veterans in the area are urged to participate in the morning activities. Children are also invited to participate in the parade; meet at the water tower at 9:15 a.m. prior to the parade. Anyone interested in having a unit in the parade should call Esther Frink at 330-359-5139.

Dave Hall will be the speaker at the Memorial Service. Hall is a newly appointed Holmes County commissioner, and he is the Republican candidate for commissioner in this year’s election. He served multiple terms in the Ohio House of Representatives and has also served as the Director of the Holmes County Park District and as State Director for USDA Rural Development in Ohio. The Hiland Band will play several selections, and the Roll Call of deceased area veterans will be read.

A social time with refreshments will be held at the Fire Station following the Memorial Service. The public is welcome.

SUGARCREEK — Memorial Day services, sponsored by Homer Weiss Post 494, of the American Legion in Sugarcreek, have been scheduled for Monday, May 30, Post Commander Dan Crenner recently announced.

The Post Honor’s Team is planning to conduct a ceremony at 7:45 a.m. at the Veteran’s Memorial in Walnut Creek. The Team will conduct honors at the Dundee Cemetery at approximately 8:30-8:40 a.m., Sugarcreek ceremonies will be at Eastlawn Cemetery at 9:30 a.m.; there will be a short ceremony at about 10:30 a.m. at Union Hill Cemetery, at the grave of Homer Weiss, to honor veterans buried there, and Post 494 will then go to Ragersville Cemetery for services. A service will also be held in Baltic at 10:30 a.m.

Ron Troyer is the featured speaker at the Sugarcreek services.

Troyer grew up in Holmes County and graduated from Hiland High School. He was drafted and served in the US Army. He served his country in the First Infantry Division and 23rd Light Infantry Brigade in Vietnam.

Troyer always puts God first, followed by family and country. He and his wife Mary have resided in Sugarcreek for the past 35 years. He is a member of Post 494 and the Post Honor’s Team.

Also participating at Sugarcreek will be the Garaway High School Band, Boy and Girl Scouts, Post Commander Dan Crenner and Post Chaplain Bill Johnson. Two students from Miller Ave. Elementary School will give traditional readings. Zooey Collins, daughter of Monte and Brittany Collins will give “In Flanders’ Field “and Chloe Bracken, daughter of Mike and Natalie Bracken and Rachel and Brode Wilson. will give the Gettysburg Address. Scott Derr of Dover will be protraying a Civil War veteran and member of Ricksecker Post 469, GAR, will be placing the Medal of Honor flag at the grave of Milton Blickensderfer, winner of the medal during the Civil War.

Post Commander Crenner invities all citizens to participate in the Memorial Day services. Post 494 will continue to decorate veteran’s graves as in the past. If one is missed, contact Crenner or Jeff Schrock.

BLISSFIELD — Memorial Day Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, May 29, at the Blissfield Cemetery, just south of the Holmes-Coshocton County line off of State Route 60.

Killbuck VFW Post 7079 will conduct military graveside services in honor of Michael Didinger of Millersburg, who died Dec. 14, 2021. He served in the U.S. Army in the Vietnam War. Keynote speaker is Ken Smailes, local historian and pastor. The Walhonding Rube Band will provide music.

In case of inclement weather, the services will be held at the Blissfield United Methodist Church.
