The 102-year-old Massillon Woman’s Club has a full schedule of holiday events at its 1894 mansion headquarters, Five Oaks. Board member Joan Camp is effusive about the place the Woman’s Club calls home.

“If you’ve been to Stan Hywet Hall in Akron, Five Oaks is as amazing, just a little smaller,” Camp said. “It’s a perfect setting for the holidays and beautifully decorated for Christmas.”

“The Strolling Nutcracker” will run Nov. 26-28 at Five Oaks. “It starts in the ballroom, then moves through the rooms of the mansion,” Camp said.

The Tchaikovsky ballet, “The Nutcracker,” is normally performed onstage before an audience. In this twist, unique to the holidays at the Massillon Woman’s Club, dancers perform the ballet in motion, moving through the rooms of the old home as they tell the story of toys coming to life for Christmas. Five shows will be presented: Friday, Nov. 26 at 7 p.m.; Saturday, Nov. 27 at 2 and 8 p.m.; and Sunday, Nov. 28 at 12:30 and 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $40 and $45 and can be purchased by calling 330-477-7171. The event is presented by Candy Apple’s Dance Center of Canton.

A holiday lunch program will be offered at Five Oaks on Thursday and Friday, Dec. 9 and 10. Punch will be served at 11 a.m., and then a special program will begin at 11:30 a.m. Lunch and a fashion show are then set to begin at 12:15 p.m. Reservations are needed and can be made by calling the club at 330-833-4896.

Dec. 19 will bring the chance to see the decorated Five Oaks mansion for free as the house fills with the smells of homemade cookies. “Our members, and we have about 300 members,” Camp said, “bake and donate all the cookies. It’s one of our big fundraisers and very popular. We often sell out of the cookies.”

Visitors can tour the home and purchase fresh-baked cookies by the dozen. Cafe food also will be available from the Five Oaks kitchen.

A basket raffle is planned for the same day, which also is a key fundraiser for the club. “The money helps us to keep the home maintained and running smoothly,” Camp said.

The baskets to be raffled are filled with local goodies, wines, gift cards and other items. The baskets are put together by the club’s many groups.

At the same time, also on Dec. 19, Santa will visit in the ballroom with the chance to get pictures taken and tell him your Christmas wishes. Reservations for the open house, cookie walk and Santa are not required. Massillon Woman’s Club suggests visitors wear masks when attending events or tours.

Massillon Woman’s Club offers members many ways to learn with groups devoted to history, wine, gardening, arts and crafts, music, bridge playing, cooking, literature and more.

Five Oaks is at 210 Fourth St. NE in Massillon. The home was built by Mr. and Mrs. J. Walter McClymonds and completed in 1894. Family descendants donated the home to the Massillon Woman’s Club in 1924. The home is available for showers, weddings, parties and other events.
