Preparations are underway for the second annual Millersburg Food Run, a 10k race, 5k race and 1-mile walk/run held to raise funds for the local food pantry. The event will begin at 8 a.m. at Hipp Station Depot in Millersburg on Aug. 4.

The race is the brainchild of the Millersburg Seventh-day Adventist Church. “We wanted to make a difference in our community, and we are excited to further support a ministry that we were already participating in,” said Eva Ryckman Durbin, race coordinator.

The church collects nonperishable food items for the pantry, and funds generated by the event will allow the pantry to purchase additional items to supplement the food donations they receive.

New this year is a child registration for the 1-mile course. “This is an activity the whole family can participate in,” Durbin said.

There will be competitive 5k and 10k courses and a noncompetitive 1 mile run/walk, an option for families and children. The race is on a flat, paved Rails-to-Trails path (former train track), starting at Hipp Station Depot near historic downtown Millersburg.

All participants who register by July 5 will be guaranteed a T-shirt, medal, goodie bag and ticket for prize drawings. T-shirts will be on a first come, first served basis for registrations after July 5. Following the race, there will be snacks and prize drawings for all participants.

Gift basket donations are from local businesses including Amish Country Theater, AutoZone, E&H Ace Hardware, SmartStyle Salon and University of Akron.

The race is sponsored by many local businesses including Boyd & Wurthmann Restaurant, Chuck Nicholson Inc., Dr. Brad Welsh Dentistry, Grace Mennonite Church, Guggisberg Cheese, Killbuck Savings Bank, Mast Farm Services, Melway Paving, Rozuk Radiology and Village Motors Inc.
