It has been said great things often stem from humble beginnings.

The Mt. Hope Sundown Sale is a prime example of an event that started small and has grown larger each year.

With a history spanning more than 30 years, the Sundown Sale began with the late Eli Wengerd of the Country Mart and Mount Hope Fabric Store to show gratitude to the community for its support and patronage and as a way to help others in need.

The annual Mt. Hope Sundown Sale may be a little misleading in its name because it takes place all day long, but one thing that is spot on is the great savings that will be found throughout town starting at 8 a.m. at participating businesses.

Many participating retail stores will offer plenty of savings in what is always a fun day of fellowship, food and entertainment.

The annual Mt. Hope event, always on the second Friday in July, has been around for a long time, but it continues to be a popular event and a way for the community and merchants to thank customers and visitors and benefit those who might need help.

The event has grown into a town event including most if not all the Mount Hope area businesses and is organized by members of the Mount Hope Business Association.

The 2022 event will be held Friday, July 8, beginning at 8 a.m. and running all day with special savings throughout the businesses in town. Visitors can get a barbecue chicken dinner, which will be available for dining in at the arena or can be carried out to enjoy at home.

All participating retail businesses have gone to great lengths to create sales opportunities, and in addition, they are all involved with the enormous drawing that will take place. The local merchants contribute to prizes to be awarded by drawing from entry tickets accumulated from customer purchases.

Rounding out the event will be live musical performances at the Dean Beachy Arena in the Mount Hope Events Center and special prize drawings. Visitors to participating Mount Hope businesses during the Sundown Sale will want to register for the prize drawings and be sure to be present when winners are announced beginning at 8 p.m. Proceeds from the event will be placed into a community fund to help support local events and activities and to help individuals or families in need.

The Mount Hope Merchants Association invites all to visit the community on July 8 and to enjoy the savings, music, food and prize giveaways from this year’s event as their way of expressing gratitude from a blessed business community.
