The 1k fun run is perfect for families with young children as a way to help raise funds for the Mennonite Central Committee's mission of COVID-19 relief. The 1k fun run is a virtual event this year.

The Mennonite Central Committee's annual Run 4 Relief will have, like many other events in 2020, a different look this year, but the goals remain the same.

The Ohio Mennonite Relief Sale Run 4 Relief 1k and 5k event will be a virtual run this year. Runners will sign up for the 1k or 5k distance at www.ohiomccreliefsale.org/run-relief-5k. Participants will run distances from Saturday, Sept. 5 until Saturday, Oct. 3 on their personal 5k or 1k race course. A photo or run-route reply will signal the completion of the run.

The Ohio Mennonite Relief Sale raises money for Mennonite Central Committee, a worldwide ministry of Anabaptist churches sharing God's love and compassion for all in the name of Christ by responding to basic human needs and working for peace and justice. MCC envisions communities worldwide in a right relationship with God, one another and creation.

MCC is having a milestone birthday. It has been 100 years since MCC first responded to basic human needs in Southern Russia (present-day Ukraine). Unlike the famine in Ukraine 100 years ago, COVID-19 has affected everyone, everywhere — and all the countries where MCC works.

For 2020 the Run 4 Relief will focus on sharing COVID-19 hygiene kits with those in need around the world. By supporting the Run 4 Relief 5k or 1k, you will help MCC to assist families around the world by providing a COVID-19 hygiene kit. Each $20 increment will be enough to purchase items in-country for one kit. The kit includes hand soap, laundry detergent, disinfectant or bleach, and a bucket.

For those with younger children who want to support the run, the 1k fun run is ideal. This virtual event will not be timed, and no awards will be given to those who finish first, middle or last. However, everyone who participates in either event will receive an event T-shirt.

To make this event more meaningful, all participants will be asked to choose one of three activities to complete to reduce their running time. The choices are as follows:

—Purchasing an item at an MCC Thrift Store. Stores are in Berlin, Hartville and Kidron (share photo of purchase).

—Cook and eat a meal from the More With Less or Simply in Season cookbooks (share photo of meal).

—Answer three questions about MCC’s 100-year history (see the Run 4 Relief website for questions).

The participants will send one photo of themselves running and one photo of themselves completing the activity. Families may submit one photo of all family members. When the photo of the activity is received, 30 seconds will be taken off the run time. The registration fees will be donated to MCC to purchase locally bought buckets of sanitation supplies to reduce the spread of the COVID-19 virus. A donation of $20 will purchase a complete bucket for one family.

Use the OMRS website under Attractions/Run4Relief 5k to sign up for the events. Registrations also may be mailed to the address listed on this website. The 5k registration fee is $30, and the 1k fee is $15. Join virtually this year to assist others in need.
