Residents have responsibility to fund new school

Letter to the Editor:

On March 17 the citizens of the New Philadelphia School District have an opportunity to enhance the future of the district as we know it today.

The Ohio School Facilities Commission is offering 55 percent reimbursement toward the construction of new buildings and demolition of existing buildings. The district has hosted community meetings to interpret what the community would like our future school system to look like and to educate attendees on the condition of our current facilities. I have attended several of those meetings.

I am a resident of New Philadelphia and a former school board member. My wife and three daughters graduated from the district. Like many citizens, I have always supported the New Philadelphia School District, whether the issue was a renewal or an operating levy. However, I realize any tax increase may not be economically feasible for some households.

I believe the community-driven plan is a solid, well-thought plan. I also believe the location is a good one. Much effort has been spent by real-estate experts looking for a school campus site. They generously donated their time.

New buildings would be equipped with sprinkler systems, as well as monitored fire alarms. Having monitored alarms and fire-suppression systems enhance the margin of safety for students and staff. A fire in its incipient stage can be controlled quickly with minimal water, which also decreases the amount of fire, smoke and property damage.

We are fortunate to have amazing teachers, administrators, support staff and coaches in the New Philadelphia district dedicated to fostering a top-tier learning environment. It’s our responsibility to fund the other 45 percent of this opportunity to assist their efforts.

I am voting for Issue 4 to support our school children, our school district and our community.

Jim Parrish
