Despite a year of business shutdowns, high unemployment and other pandemic-related concerns, last year’s Salute Freedom Project was a record year for members of the Rotary Club of New Philadelphia.

In 2020 the club placed 214 American flags at homes and businesses in the city, a number significantly higher than the previous year, according to Tom Police, project co-chairman.

“We kicked off our project last year with a picture of club members wearing masks and hoping for the best,” Police said. “We would have been pleased with retaining as many of our 2019 participants as possible. We did that and added about 60 new subscribers in our program.”

The Salute Freedom Project is kicking off its 10th year of placing 3-by-5-foot American flags on 10-foot poles at residential and business locations of subscribers. Teams of Rotary Club members put the flags up prior to the Memorial Day holiday weekend. They remain in place through Veterans Day on Nov. 11. The cost is $30 per flag with proceeds benefiting the Rotary Club’s community-service projects.

As a community service, the Rotary Club places flags on the street-light poles in the downtown area and along North Broadway by Tuscora Park.

The other project co-chairman, Mark Garrison, coordinates the Salute Freedom subscriptions and installation routes.

“This year we have an online website to enable new subscribers and those renewing to sign up and make their payment through a secure pay site,” Garrison said.

The project’s website is at www.app.helpingwithflags.com/New-Phil-Rotary.

“We have email addresses for many of our past subscribers, and they should have already received their renewal information in that manner,” Garrison said. “The rest of last year’s subscribers have been sent a paper renewal form in the U.S. Mail.”

Garrison said paper forms also can be downloaded from this site for both new and renewing subscribers who prefer to send a check or simply send name, address and phone number to the New Philadelphia Rotary at P.O. Box 331, New Philadelphia, OH 44663.

Flags in the Salute Freedom Project are placed only within the New Philadelphia city limits.
