The Salvation Army Learning Zone recently announced its summer day camp information for students currently in kindergarten through fifth grade. Ten camps will be held starting June 7 through Aug. 13 Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The cost is $60 per week per camper. Additional fees for small field trips may be added.

“We are very excited to provide campers with a fun-filled, positive summer,” said Barb Huff, program director at Salvation Army Learning Zone. “We have a great staff and volunteers who have the potential to make a big impact on these kids’ lives.

“The core mission of the Learning Zone here in New Philadelphia is built on the idea of helping families and schools create excited learners. We are deliberate in all we do, from tutoring after school to child-led play with the intention of making learning fun. Our summer day camp just continues with that mission.”

The Salvation Army Learning Zone is a before and after school enrichment program available to students in Dover, New Philadelphia and Tuscarawas Central Catholic Elementary School.

“Tutoring in both group and individual settings is a main focus of Learning Zone and day camp. We do this with games, activities, movement, songs, chants and technology,” Huff said. “We make every effort to not use paper and pencil work in what we do here. We do help with homework, and we just don’t want to bombard them with more papers to make them less likely to want to do their homework. Head tutor Jennie Arbogast is a former teacher and has worked hard to create activities that help strengthen basic math skills and reading in a fun, engaging way.”

Day camp highlights

Each week of camp will follow the same format:

—Monday: tutoring in math and reading in the morning and guest visitors in the afternoon including every other week hosting a Tuscarawas County Public Library pop-up library.

—Tuesday: Forest School, a day of exploration and play at some of the local outdoor parks and trails.

—Wednesday: tutoring in the morning and Water Wednesdays, backyard water play including water balloons, water games and the giant Slip ‘N Slide.

—Thursday: tutoring in the morning and afternoon club times, a day the campers can spend time in the clubs they create based on their interests.

—Friday: field trip days (field trip list will be released on Facebook and to campers once it is finalized).

Summer Fun Zone day camp will follow all guidance from the governor’s office in regards to the pandemic. Teachers and campers will wear masks indoors and on the Salvation Army bus. Regular sanitation and hand-washing will be required.
