Letter to the Editor:

We are writing in support of the New Philadelphia City Schools bond issue that will appear on the March 17 primary election ballot.

We believe in strong public schools. Strong public schools are necessary for a sustainable, prosperous community. We want New Philadelphia to continue to be a great place to live and work.

The Master Facilities Plan put forth by our board of education is prudent. It is the result of a transparent and inclusive process.

Our board engaged credible experts to assist with the assessment of our existing facilities and to present alternative solutions to address our needs. Feedback from all New Philadelphians was invited. All concerns were considered. Many locations were reviewed. The most desirable locations were simply not available, but the Oak Shadows property is a great solution.

The ultimate decision to build all new buildings is the most effective and least expensive solution for New Philadelphia. The State of Ohio will only help to pay for new facilities. Any solution that includes repair or renovation of existing buildings will require more local taxes now and will result in higher operating costs in the future.

In addition to being the least expensive solution for New Philadelphia, the biggest benefits of new school buildings are the improved personal security of our children, teachers and staff and the elimination of overcrowded conditions in our elementary buildings. The safety of our children is priceless, and the best education requires suitable and ample space.

Please join us in supporting the upcoming bond issue to improve our school facilities. Go Quakers.
