Letter to the Editor:

The week of May 12-18 is slated to be recognized as Ohio Law Enforcement Memorial Week. This is a time when law enforcement along with our community identify and acknowledge those officers who gave their lives to the public good.

We as a supportive community reflect this time in recognition for the everyday work these brave men and women perform. Daily they leave their families and homes to protect ours.

They advance toward trouble, not retreat, sometimes with the knowledge there is a compromising decision for their own safety. But we as a community expect this valor and heroism.

Being a law-enforcement officer is more than a job; it’s a way of life. Please join together as a community and remember to thank these special people. They are our neighbors, our friends and our peace keepers who live amongst us. Thank you.

Thomas G. Maurer, retired Wayne County sheriff
