David Dean will bring his family-friendly comedy show to Shreve Community Church on Saturday, Jan. 18.

Proceeds from his 7 p.m. show at Shreve Community Church will benefit the church’s Cuban mission team. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for youth age 5-18. Children age 4 and under are free. The fundraiser also will include a spaghetti dinner from 5-6:30 p.m. with an additional suggested donation of $10 and a silent auction from 6-7 p.m.

Dean said he is eager to be part of the fundraiser event because he shares a passion for overseas missions. For the past 15 years, he’s hosted weeklong mission trips to the Dominican Republic through New Missions, an organization that provides children with education, food and medical care.

He recognized at an early age that making people laugh was part of his DNA.

“I had funny parents and grandparents,” he said. “I watched my dad basically do open mic in our living room when he would come home from work and tell stories about the events of the day. He probably embellished a little, but it was comedy gold.”

When Dean was about 8 years old, he said, “My family got a big kick out of me doing impressions of family members and my third grade teacher.”

He credits his family with giving him direction for his career in comedy, which has spanned more than 30 years.

He’s worked in venues across the country from clubs, colleges and conventions to cruise ships and even the military base in Guantánamo Bay Cuba.

In the late ‘80s, he attended the Second City School of Improvisational Comedy in Chicago, where he learned to think quickly on his feet and respond to the audience. Eventually, he began sharing his humor at faith-based events.

Married with two grown children, Dean said his best comedy comes from life events. When sharing about them on stage, he said, “You realize they are those moments that happen to everybody.”

He said he doesn’t preach or give testimony during his show, but he weaves in stories about his faith.

“I hope people will feel very comfortable inviting friends and family to come to the church for this event,” he said. “I’m truly looking forward to being there.”

Tickets for the David Dean Comedy Show may be purchased at Shreve Community Church, 430 N. Main St., Shreve, or by calling 330-567-2051, visiting www.shrevecommunitychurch.org or prior to the show.
