The fishermen had their day, and now it is time for the women to find plenty of new ways to explore beauty products, experience a number of speakers and demonstrations, and have a day of shopping at the inaugural Holmes County Women’s Expo at Harvest Ridge April 12-13.

When Harvest Ridge was created, it included a new expo center was designed to help bring in new events. While all of the old favorites like the furniture show and others were immediately penciled into the schedule at Harvest Ridge, the staff was excited about the opportunities to usher in a series of seminars and events that would pique a wide variety of interests.

Recently the county’s first show dedicated solely to anglers and the fishing industry took place and was an instant success.

Now women will have their day, actually two days, at the Women’s Expo.

“We are very excited to bring a brand-new show and a brand-new experience to the expo center,” said Shasta Mast, executive director of the Holmes County Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Bureau. “Something like this appeals to both locals and visitors, and it is something different for people to experience here that they haven’t necessarily experienced before.”

A wide variety of vendors, unique products and services will be presented with the intent of providing a little bit of everything for attendees.

“We are going to see a whole host of vendors presenting a wonderful shopping experience,” Mast said of the show. “I think people are going to be amazed at what they find here.”

In addition, the Killbuck Savings Bank, First Knox National Bank and The Commercial and Savings Bank will present a variety of speakers and demonstrations for those attending the event.

The event features a series of speakers that touch on a number of topics.

Ohio State University Extension of Holmes County educator Kate Shumaker will present quick recipes in two “Cooking with Kate” demonstrations. Her shows will be Friday at 4:30 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m.

Weaver Leather will demonstrate the art of leather crafting at 5:30 p.m. on Friday while Barbara Chalmers-Miller will show how to repurpose home decor items that many people might have stashed away in their attics, closets or basements on Friday at 6:30 p.m.

Other speakers and demonstrations, all on Saturday, include “Tools & You,” a tool-use demonstration by Keim Lumber at 10 a.m.; local organic gardener Karen Geiser from Lehman’s at 11 a.m.; and Nelle Weaver’s seminar, “Decluttering and Organization, at noon.

Rounding out the speakers will be Kristina Glazier, who will focus on “Damsel in Defense,” a self-defense techniques for women seminar on Saturday at 2 p.m.

If you enjoy shopping, learning new things and spending an enjoyable day with friends and family or are looking for a great girls’ day out, this is the event for you.

“One thing we hear a lot is that people coming to visit our area enjoy the experience, but they want to experience something new,” Mast said. “You can’t simply reinvent your whole destination every year. You can’t just create a whole new theater every year, which we have been very fortunate to do the past couple of years. But you can grow and have new events that give visitors another reason to come. Having both this expo center and the Mt. Hope event center available to create new opportunities to bring people to Holmes County is a true blessing for us. It is a great thing from both a local perspective and a visitor’s perspective.”

Admission to the Holmes County Women’s Expo is $5, and hours for the event are Friday, April 12 from 4-8 p.m. and Saturday, April 13 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Harvest Ridge Expo & Event Center, 8880 state Route 39, just west of Millersburg.
